The Rule did make provision for the monastic community to help the disenfranchised, those at the margins of their community, but the manner of outreach was different. The superior, supported by older and more experienced monastics, bore the responsibility of getting back the lost.

Twelve-step outreach is voluntary peer outreach. We have no “superiors.” My sponsor may have more time or experience in recovery, but we are peers; we all live out our sobriety one day at a time. I am as prone to fall prey to the baffling, cunning, and powerful nature of my addiction as is my sponsor, but we journey together. There are no experts. Recovery is a lifelong personal commitment, much like the vow of stability of place, by which Benedictine monastics promise to stay put in the community they join, and not seek another.

Lord, I claim membership in the wider recovery community, and I pledge stability of place to my primary group meeting, where I have so deeply shared life’s darkest secrets. I need to be there. I want to be there. Heighten my commitment to do so. Make me appreciate how much the wider recovery community means to me. Thanks, Lord, for the gift of twelve-step living. Amen.
